Ok, I see a critical mass joining the challenge...so I'll throw this out for discussion: what are the ground rules of the challenge? Scope? Objective? What exactly do we mean by "bringing domestic back"?

These are great questions Erika! Here's what I came up with so far...
Bringing Domestic Back Challenge: I think that somewhere between the invention of the microwave and the increasing amount of work hours, we've lost that homemade aspect in our lives. "Why would I need to make something, when I can save time by paying someone else to do it for me?" Who needs to cook a meal when McDonalds is just down the street? Who needs to make clothes when there are so many cheap options? Lets try to minimize this by learning to not to completely depend on technology or the convenience of the modern world.
Ground Rules: I haven't really thought this part out yet, but that is an excellent point. I suppose pictures of your craft, meal, etc. would help. I'd like some kind of evidence to know that you actually did the week's challenge. Maybe some instructions for the take you did on the challenge (like the craft you came up with or the recipe you followed). If you have any other ideas about that, then please do let me know. I'd love to hear them! =]
Objective: When I thought about starting a challenge like this I was thinking about challenging members to go outside the bounds of their comfort zone. It's one thing to know how to cook, but are you too afraid to try a new recipe? Cook with a certain ingredient? Are you afraid of trying a craft? I wanted a place where we had to put our apprehension aside and just do it already. And in turn, we'd learn things we normally wouldn't do on our own, and become more well rounded individuals.
This can even extend into the social circuit. Are you worried about meeting new people? Domestic gods/goddesses don't just know how to cook and clean but how to entertain guests and hold intellectual conversations. I'd like for us all to get to that point.
Wow that is pretty deep, you know in the world we live now with everything changing so fast. This actually makes me think that we dont know any basic skill we always rely on technology to do the most basic things in our life. So im up to the challenge so we can all learn from our skills.
Wow - you have given this quite a bit of thought. Ok - when are our deadlines? Do we consider a week's challenge due at 11:59 Sunday night or 5pm Friday...I personally need the weekend to get my craft mojo going, but I have the kernel of an idea - thanks for the inspiration, Jane!

Yes, I realized last night that that is what I forgot to write about. Ok here's what I thinking for deadlines. Now I originally decided to start the challenges on Fridays, but I thought about it and maybe it should start on Mondays. That way, you have time to think about what you're going to do with the challenge and then have the weekend to work on it. Does that sound good? So if we move the challenges to Mondays then I think the deadline will be Sunday, 11:59 pm.

Great. I guess we'll just wait for any other input. We have until Monday now. =] By the way, would you like to host one week's challenge? You just need to come up with a topic, ingredient, etc to challenge us and maybe moderate that week. Brenda has already signed up for one week (Feb. 25) so let me know if you'd like to host one. You can see the calendar on the front for some dates.
Sure - I would be more than happy to host. What are your expectations for hosting? Start a new discussion the week of the challenge with defined guidelines for the challenge and facilitate the discussion? I take it each new challenge week will have its own idea, not necessarily under the overall thread of this week's challenge, right? For example, I could host a challenge on crafted games or cartoon-themed hats, right?

Yup, that's exactly right. A set of simple rules, their challenge for the week, all in one forum. Every week has it's completely own topic so if one week it's about food, next week, it could be about meeting new people. Totally up to you, as long as it's within reason. =] I'll put you on the calendar.
